The British Columbia Teachers' Federation

has the honor of inviting you to participate in the

The 12th Tri-national Conference for the Defense of Public Education

which will be held in

Vancouver, British Columbia on May 13 - 15, 2016

Please save the dates and send participants to the 12th Tri-national Conference in Defense of Public Education. This conference comes as the North American
Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) may be expanded with conditions set out in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), negotiated in the last days of the
Stephen Harper government in Canada. The TTP, if ratified, will further the undermining of social and educational rights and services in Mexico,
the United States, and Canada.

The conference will be held on May 13-15, 2016, hosted by the BC Teachers' Federation on the campus of the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, BC.

The Tri-national Coalition is an informal organization of advocates of public education from Canada, Mexico, and the United States that began with a conference in
Olympia, Washington, in 1993. The coalition has held a conference every other year since then to build understanding and solidarity among education activists in the
three countries.

Participation does not require formal representation from organizations. Rather, it is a space for discussion from multiple organizations and perspectives. Any reports
and action proposals from the Tri-national conference are not binding on organizations or participants, but are a reflection of views of those participating.
More information about the conference can be found by clicking on the following conference link:

Previous Conferences:

Conference 2012 - Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico

Conference 2010 - Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Since NAFTA created new links between Mexico, the U.S. and Canada in 1994, education union activists from the three countries have met at a conference every two to three years.  The purpose has been to deepen understanding of the impact of the neo-liberal policies exemplified by NAFTA on public education and to find ways to work together in mutual support of public education in the three countries.

The 10h conference, which was held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in May, 2010, was co-hosted by FNEEQ-CSN (Federation Nationale des Enseignantes et Enseignants du Quebec) and the CSQ (Centrale des Syndicats du Quebec). This conference provided another opportunity to join in this process. More the 260 union representatives and other education activists from several regions in Quebec, Canada, the United States and Mexico participated in this event.
